Staten Island University hospital waited four months to inform 88,000 patients that their information was compromised during a data breach, according to a May 11 Staten Island Advance article.
The hospital reportedly sent letters to the patients, the vast majority of whom had been treated during 2007, on May 1, the newspaper reported.
The breach occurred in December 2007 when a password-protected desktop computer containing patient names, Social Security numbers, and health insurance numbers was stolen from a hospital billing office, according to the article.
The hospital is offering a year of free credit monitoring to those involved.
