CMS announced a new pilot project in which it will give Medicare beneficiaries in South Carolina access to personal health records (PHR) populated by their own claims data, according to a May 7 CMS press release.
During the 12-month pilot that began on April 4, beneficiaries will be able to access information pertaining to medical conditions, hospitalizations, doctor visits, and medications, according to the press release. Beneficiaries will use HealthTrio—a PHR tool that currently offers PHRs to thousands of individuals through employer contracts. This PHR tool provides convenient links to Web sites and other educational material to enable the user to conduct research to better understand health conditions.
“By using a PHR, patients with the pilot will have easy access to personalized medical information that will enable them to be more involved with their health care services,” said CMS Acting Administrator Kerry Weems in the press release.
A PHR is different from an EHR in that a PHR is under the control of the consumer or patient whereas a physician owns and controls an EHR. CMS stated in its press release that it will ensure that strict privacy and security safeguards are in place to protect all beneficiary data.
