Prepare for NPI-only deadline with "Legacy Free" day, CMS NPI Roundtable

Test your NPI-readiness on “Legacy Free” day, May 7.
CMS and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society have asked clearinghouses that submit claims to FFS Medicare to participate in a one-day trial—termed “Legacy Free” day—as a preparation exercise for the fast approaching May 23 deadline, according to an April 28 CMS Communication. On May 7 participating clearinghouses should submit Medicare claims without legacy numbers in all provider identifier fields for which a provider currently uses NPI/legacy pairs.
“In other words, clearinghouses will strip the legacy identifiers when they are submitted as part of an NPI/legacy pair,” according to the CMS Communication. (Note: May 8 participating clearinghouses will revert back to sending Medicare NPI/legacy pairs.) The results of the legacy number-free testing will give providers insight as to whether they have problems with their Medicare claims that they will need to resolve prior to May 23 in order to ensure an uninterrupted cash flow.
Participating clearinghouses will notify provider clients with details in the near future, so pay close attention to Clearinghouse communications, advises CMS.
CMS has released several important communications in recent days regarding the NPI May 23 implementation date. Visit the CMS Web site often throughout the month to read about the latest developments.
