In observance of the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Privacy and Security Week (April 13-19), the organization has released a report based on a recent roundtable discussion with various experts in the field of health information privacy, according to the report on the AHIMA Web site.
The report, "Online, on Message, on Duty: Privacy Experts Share Their Challenges," acknowledges the increasing need for privacy and security as EHRs become more common—and as the media reports on privacy and security breaches of all varieties.
The experts individual opinions are expressed in the report, though all agree on the following:
- Education and attention to issues of access are essential to preventing privacy breaches
- Privacy officers continue to focus on clarifying misinformation and misunderstanding regarding HIPAA and other emerging issues, such as medical identity theft and portable device security
- CMS’ increasing focus on investigations of alleged breaches makes preparation and a proactive approach to HIPAA compliance an advisable strategy
- Communication and collaboration are essential to ensuring that a covered entity’s privacy and security programs function effectively together
