The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology plans to ask Congress to amend HIPAA to ensure the privacy of genetic information in a report the panel will release sometime mid-2008, according to an article in Government Health IT.
The panel also met with President George W. Bush April 8 to discuss the importance of privacy legislation as the use of electronic health records continues to rise, according to the April 9 article.
Other organizations, including the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics and the American Health Information Community’s Confidentiality, Privacy and Security work group, also are calling for increased privacy requirements for organizations not currently regulated by HIPAA, according to Government Health IT.
