Protect patient information with an effective data recovery plan.

A contingency plan and strategy for recovering data after a disaster isn't just part of a good risk management program, it's a requirement of HIPAA's proposed security rule.

According to a survey conducted recently on HIMinfo.com, 60% of facilities have a disaster plan in place for their health information data.

Start by looking at each computer system in your facility and "determining the impact [of a breakdown] to your organization for different periods of time and ask whether manual procedures can carry out" your facility's operations, said William M. Miaoulis, CISA, principal at Phoenix Health Systems in Montgomery Village, MD.
