The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) recently released a report on federal and state laws that protect the privacy of behavioral health patients, according to the CHCF Web site.

The report, "A Delicate Balance: Behavioral Health, Patient Privacy, and the Need to Know," takes an in-depth look at the interaction of HIPAA and other privacy laws that protect mental health and substance abuse information. The report also examines the balance between appropriately restricting the disclosure of behavioral health treatment information to protect privacy with the benefits-such as fewer treatment errors and fuller understanding of patient needs-that sharing information can bring.
