Checking references is an important step in determining which electronic health record vendor you will choose. Ask potential vendors whether you can speak with at least one client that already uses the product. Be sure to view the product in a facility that is similar to yours and that has a similar practice profile and a comparable number of clinicians. Be sure the facility actually uses the product. Be wary of vendor-arranged visits because a vendor won't recommend that you visit someone who is unhappy with the product. Also, remember that vendors often offer demonstration site hosts significant discounts on software in exchange for welcoming potential customers, so find product users who are likely to give you an honest assessment.
