The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), a nonprofit public interest organization, announced the launch of a healthcare information privacy and information technology (IT) project in a March 11 CDT press release. In preparation for the project, the Health Privacy Project, a formerly independent organization, has joined CDT in an effort to uniquely qualify the organization to meet its ambitious goals.
"The potential of health information exchange will be realized only if privacy is addressed," Leslie Harris, president and CEO of CDT, said in the press release.
The project will address common privacy concerns about increasing IT usage in the healthcare industry, according to the press release. While CDT recognizes the incredible value of new technologies, it also wishes to address the tremendous implications technology has on patient privacy.
The project also will address issues such as:
- The proper role of notice and consent for releasing information
- The right of patients to access their own electronic records
- Identification and authentication
- Secondary uses of patient information
- Enforcement mechanisms
- The exchange of records among providers and payers
- Personal health records
