Don't be too hard on yourselves if everything did not go exactly as planned during an unannounced Joint Commission survey. Incorporate lessons learned into your rollout plan and then move on.

Identify techniques from the more successful teams and apply them to those that are struggling. Don't be afraid to reassess team composition and make changes as needed. Learn to manage your elements of performance evidence documents, such as meeting minutes and reports, in a way that keeps them survey-ready. Action items during the current month's meeting should become unfinished business in the next agenda so that you ensure completion of these items.

Generate additional interest by showcasing innovative ideas for patient care improvements. Publish your work in your hospital newsletter, but also consider submitting an article to a professional newsletter or listserv.
