Health Net Federal Services (HNFS), a health insurance company that serves nearly 3 million veterans and military families in 23 states, inadvertently posted physicians' Social Security numbers on its Web site, according to a February 29 article by the Associated Press (AP) as seen in the Wausau Daily Herald.

HNFS, based in Rancho Cordova, CA, inadvertently made the data available for more than a month between November 2007 and January 2008. Web browsers could view the information using a GoogleT search engine.

HNFS is offering free credit monitoring to physicians who were affected by the breach.
