Tip: Beware of remark code N363 for the POA indicator

Hospitals that don't submit proper present on admission (POA) information will begin to see remark code N363 on their remittance advice between now and April 1, a CMS representative stated during the most recent hospital Open Door Forum call.
Remark code N363 indicates the following: "Alert--In the near future, we are implementing new policies or procedures that would affect this determination."
"When you see this remark code on your remittance advice, this is to alert you that there is a problem with your submission of POA," the CMS representative said.
Although CMS will currently pay claims that receive this remark code, as of April 1, it will return these claims to providers when any diagnoses on the claim do not include a valid POA indicator. "You must submit a matching number of POA indicators as diagnoses in order for the claim to process for payment," the representative added.
