Most states have made significant progress with respect to defining their privacy and security approaches for electronic health information exchange (HIE), according to a recent report by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
The agencies, both part of HHS, released details of the Impact Analysis Report in a February 14 press release.
Progress during the past two years includes:
- Greater awareness of privacy and security issues as an essential component of success in developing and sustaining statewide HIE plans in 23 states
- Increased support for planned HIEs in 14 states
- Legislative activities aimed at updating privacy and security statutes in preparation for electronic HIE in 11 states.
"The report released is evidence of the significant role and impact that states and territories can have in advancing health information technology while preserving and promoting privacy and security protections," said Robert Kolodner, MD national coordinator in HHS' office of the national coordinator for health information technology.
