Cleaning up the master patient index (MPI) and eliminating duplicate numbers helps improve patient care because it makes all of a patient's information available to clinicians under one medical record number. Preventing the creation of duplicate numbers should be a primary goal. Determine who creates duplicate numbers and why, and take corrective action to reduce or eliminate the problem. Also, consider generating reports from your MPI that provide the following information:
- Same patient first/last name and same date of birth, but different medical record numbers
- Same patient first/last name and same month and day of encounter, but different medical record numbers
- Same patient first name, date of birth, and Social Security number, but different medical record numbers
- Same patient last name, date of birth, and Social Security number, but different medical record numbers
