The enactment of the HIPAA privacy rule forced covered entities to examine their privacy practices more closely for the first time, and it soon became evident that many settings were rife with privacy concerns.
But compliance with the HIPAA privacy rule can be especially challenging in long-term care (LTC) facilities. Many strive to create intimate settings where staff and residents often feel--and treat each other--like family. The risk of outsiders inappropriately requesting and accessing private information is constant, and emerging technologies now reveal internal threats--electronic icebergs of sorts around which LTC facilities must gingerly navigate.
