A: According to a December 17, 2007 listening session cosponsored by CMS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following timeline specifies POA implementation:

  • October 1, 2007--ongoing: All inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) hospitals must submit POA indicator information for all primary and secondary diagnoses
  • October 1, 2007--December 31, 2007: CMS began processing all POA indicator data but did not provide feedback on receipt of successful reporting
  • January 1, 2008--March 31, 2008: CMS will process POA indicator data and provide feedback to IPPS hospitals about reporting errors
  • April 1, 2008--ongoing: IPPS hospitals will receive returned claims when they submit them without the proper POA indicator information
