1. Look for guidances.
The Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) addressed consent, the minimum necessary provision, business associates, and oral communication in its July 2001 privacy guidance. HHS said it anticipates answering the many additional questions that will arise in future guidances to be published in the Federal Register.
Go to http://www.hipaapro.com/news/hipaa_downloads.cfm for a PDF file of the July 2001 guidance.
2. Keep a close eye on the NCVHS' recommendations.
The National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) has made recommendations to HHS throughout the rule-making process to help it determine what issues it needs to address.
Go to http://ncvhs.hhs.gov/ and look under "Hot Topics" for the NCVHS' recommendations.
3. Use resources on the Web.
Regularly check the following sites:
- AHIMA's Web site http://www.ahima.org
- CMS' HIPAA page http://www.hcfa.gov/hipaa/hipaahm.htm
- HCPro's HIPAAPro http://www.hipaapro.com
- HHS' Administrative Simplification page http://aspe.os.dhhs.gov/admnsimp/
Go to http://www.hipaapro.com/howto/hipaa/resources.cfm for more helpful resources.
