QUESTION: We would like some clarification regarding when we can report HCPCS code L8610 (Ocular implant). Should a hospital assign code L8610 for items such as buckles, tires, and strips that providers use when performing retina implants?
ANSWER: No, the hospital should not report code L8610. Medicare pays for these items under the Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies Fee Schedule, and this code has a status indicator "N" (non-covered servies that Meicare will not pay for) under the OPPS. Bill the above items using revenue code 272 with no CPT/HCPCS code. If you report code L8610, it would not result in any additional reimbursement.

- Guess it depends on the state, diagnosis and procedure. In many cases billing the 272 would not work, or are included in outpatient surgeries.....or must be included on itemization.
