CMS discussed plans for NPI enforcement, clarified some NPI misconceptions, announced an upcoming NPI roundtable and WEDI audiocast, and discussed several other NPI-related topics in its January 24 Communication currently posted on the CMS Web site.
In the Communication, CMS reminds covered entities that the NPI compliance date for covered entities was May 23, 2007, except for small health plans, which have until May 23, 2008. On May 24, 2008 however, CMS plans to lift its enforcement-leniency policy. Complaints will drive enforcement, and "penalties will be a legitimate resolution if the entity does not demonstrate compliance or corrective action," according to the Communication.
CMS also addresses National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and NPI Enumerator misconceptions that have arisen through conversations and correspondence with healthcare providers, plans, and others in the industry.
In addition, CMS reiterated that it will hold a National NPI Roundtable on February 6, from 2:30-4:00 p.m. (EST). The call will address the status of the implementation process and will also feature a question and answer session.
CMS also announced that The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) will host an audiocast on NPI implementation on February 21.
