The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine has fined Boris Murillo, MD, $2,500 for violating patient privacy laws when he inappropriately accessed several patients' medical records at Berkshire Medical Center (BMC), according to a January 22 article in the Berkshire Eagle.

According to the Eagle, BMC performed an audit on the records Murillo accessed and found that he had read several "for no legitimate medical reason"; the pulmonary specialist had read obstetric and gynecological records, for example.

Several of the records Murillo accessed belonged to fellow employees who were also patients at BMC, and one of the employees has filed a lawsuit.
