Once you've cultivated the need for workflow process improvement associated with EHR implementation, determine the actual redesign and changes. Take the following steps to achieve workflow process improvement:
- Build cohesive teams.
- Orient team members to the concepts of workflow process improvement and the potential scope of EHR impact.
- Instruct team members on the objectives, timeframe for accomplishment, and use of workflow process tools.
- Map current workflow processes, brainstorm to ensure that maps are complete, and focus information on flow in preparation for the EHR.
- Obtain baseline data for use in benchmarking quality and performance.
- Identify quality and performance problems and determine their root cause(s).
- Identify suitable workflow process improvements.
- Document changes to submit to the EHR system-build team.
- Incorporate improvements in workflow processes into policies and procedures.
- Test new workflow processes before going live with the EHR.
- Train others on new workflow processes.
- Conduct benefits realization studies to evaluate changes, correct the course where necessary, and celebrate the success of workflow process improvements achieved through adoption of EHR.
