CMS has been stepping up its training with resources for the new present-on-admission (POA) indicators and hospital-acquired conditions (HAC). Clinical documentation specialists and HIM/coding staff alike may find these resources beneficial.

The resources include the following:

  • A POA fact sheet that contains some helpful POA implementation timelines, as well as documentation, coding, and billing guidance. You can find the POA fact sheet on the CMS Web site.

  • A HAC fact sheet that contains categories of conditions and their associated ICD-9-CM codes, as well as conditions CMS is considering for the 2009 IPPS final rule. You can find the HAC fact sheet on the CMS Web site.

CMS also conducted a public listening session on Dec. 17 about POA indicators and HACs. Although the listening session took place on Monday, CMS plans to post an audio download of the session on its Web site.

You can also download the session materials here.
