In the past, health care regulations have remained all but invisible to patients.
With the industry's push for patient privacy under HIPAA, comes a new generation of patients who know their rights.
"As entities are scrambling trying to comply, they're focusing on a lot of internal operational things," says Marilou King, Esq., a partner with McDermott, Will and Emery, in Washington, DC.
"The stark reality of what's going to happen is that patients [will] have a lot of questions."
HIPAA will become very visible to patients, says King. "All of a sudden, patients are going to say, 'What does it mean that I have a right to amend my records? If I have a right to do something, then I'm going to do it.' "
