Q: Has the JCAHO included HIPAA requirements in the survey application?
A: No, but the JCAHO is working on two fronts. They are trying to remove themselves from the business associate category, and they have added additional language in the Management of Information standards. Those standards cover the security of all medical record information. The revisions will be forthcoming in the near future.
The JCAHO does have security and confidentiality standards in the rights and ethics, information management, and environment of care chapters in each accreditation manual, they explained in the July issue of Joint Commission Perspectives. The standards require that
- systems allow timely and easy use of data without compromising security and confidentiality
- information is protected against loss, destruction, tampering, and unauthorized use
- organizations demonstrate respect for patient privacy and confidentiality
- organizations comply with state and federal laws and regulations
Editor's note: The above was answered during the first hospital Executive Briefing conference held in Chicago on August 24, and appears in the October 2001 issue of Briefings on JCAHO. To subscribe to BOJ, go to http://www.hcmarketplace.com/prod/showdetl.cfm?did=6&product_id=10129
