Now that CMS has unveiled its plan for value-based purchasing, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists should strike while the iron is hot.

Wendy De Vregud, RN, FNP, senior director of case management for West Group for Kindred Healthcare, Hospital Division, in Orange County, CA, says that CMS' long-range plans can help get physicians on board with a CDI program. "[Physicians], as well as hospitals, will receive more incentives and more pay in future years if they have good outcomes," she says.

In addition to the new report, DeVreugd says that the following Web sites are invaluable for tracking hospital and physician individual performances:

"These [Web sites] show you how physicians appear. Some physicians know about it, but some are very surprised that I can look up their statistical measures and hospital affiliations and even how their patients feel about them," De Vreugd says.
