National Medical Staff Services Awareness Week is the one time each year when I reflect on how I arrived at my profession and particularly how my role affects patient care. Earlier in my career, through my membership in NAMSS, I realized that I was part of a very special group of professionals. Although our job titles number in the hundreds, our responsibilities all lead to one outcome: to advance the healthcare environment in order to maximize the patient experience through the delivery of quality services. That is NAMSS' vision and that is my focus.

I remind myself of what an honor it was to have President George Bush sign a Congressional House Joint Resolution in 1992 proclaiming the first week in November as National Medical Staff Services Awareness Week. There are a few organizations that recognize the important role MSPs have in the delivery of quality healthcare. Unfortunately there are many who do not. This week, the first week in November, is our time for celebration.  By telling our story of what it is we do, we can spread the word and perhaps along the way be recognized, even appreciated, for accepting that responsibility.

This year I plan to have flowers on my desk with a small card which will say "You are valued and appreciated," signed The Patient. If nothing else, it will spark conversation!

Enjoy the week. take pride in your profession.
