The House Science and Technology Committee voted on October 24 to approve a bill that requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create standards for healthcare IT for federal agencies within one year, according to an October 24 article in Congressional Quarterly Today. Additionally, the committee voted to authorize $8 billion to fund research grants for healthcare IT in 2008 and 2009.

Tennessee Congressman and Committee Chair Bart Gordon said, "Our healthcare system is hampered by outdated paper record keeping," according to the article.

The committee hopes that if the bill becomes law it will "have far reaching effects, eventually prodding hospitals, doctor's offices, insurers and others in the private sector into widespread use of health information technology," according to the article.

Although President George Bush and Congress both support expansions in the field of healthcare IT, previous legislation has failed because of privacy concerns and the lack of a universal standard for electronic record keeping.
