Washington state's audit of their Health Professions Quality Assurance (HPQA) office found that "HPQA has not established sufficient procedures and adequate internal controls to ensure credentials are issued only to qualified individuals," according to the audit report.
Among other duties, HPQA is responsible for credentialing applicants applying for state medical licenses. The audit found that HPQA does not conduct a national criminal background check on their applicants, and that there is no follow-up to ensure that disciplined doctors are complying with their punishments. Medical staff offices who have relied on the Washington HPQA office to conduct these checks may want to conduct their own, independent background checks.
More information about this audit will be available in the November issue of Briefings on Credentialing.
