In a move that mirrors a federal plan, Vermont's government is working to mandate the use of electronic health records by 2011. The current plan aims to convert patients' charts to electronic records, making them easier for healthcare organizations to share state wide. However, once this information is switched over to an electronic format, a similar conversation regarding the electronic conversion of credentialing files may not be far behind, as such an initiative could add speed to the credentialing process.
Vermont Information Technology Leaders, the nonprofit group behind the plan, pointed to similar preparations in other states that, together, make up a larger plan by the federal government to develop a nationwide health information network by 2014.
