Yes and no. For coverage history you can only contact the carrier(s) individually. However, for malpractice claims that have been settled or judgments rendered, the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) is the first and quickest resource. Nevertheless, not all claims are reported for a variety of reasons, as allowed by the NPDB regulations. Further there is no information in the NPDB on open claims.
Therefore, a best practice is to contact the individual malpractice carrier to determine if any claims have been paid out or filed for the individual. This provides much more comprehensive information. Only one carrier (in Arizona) that we know of has automated this query/response to selected clients.
This is a labor-intensive effort but an excellent risk management and quality improvement measure that a majority of organizations increasingly are doing.
