Tip of the week: Don't use reappointment to play "gotcha"

Performance data should not be a surprise to a physician when it comes time for his or her reappointment process. Unfortunately, reappointment is frequently the first time that organizations pull together into a coherent picture data on a physician's performance.
At reappointment time, you are considering modifying a physician's membership or privileges based on past performance. This makes it a very high-stakes time-and a very defensive time-for physicians. Revealing such data only at reappointment also doesn't give the physician a chance to self-correct prior to his or her membership or privileges being in jeopardy.
The best approach is to provide periodic performance reports to physicians, at least annually and preferably more often.
