The credentialing and privileging processes can be lengthy and frustrating for both the applicant and the MSP performing the credentialing. However, as an MSP, it is important that you maintain a high level of professionalism at all times. You will find that when dealing with frustrated or angry individuals-either an applicant or any other individual you encounter during the credentialing process-it is easier to diffuse the situation by maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
MSPs naturally assume a tremendous amount of responsibility for an organization. At times, administrators or physicians may pressure an MSP to cut corners or overlook certain procedural requirements in order to expedite an application. This can be a tough situation for an MSP to deal with; ethically, however, you should do everything you can to ensure that you are following your policies and procedures.
More information can be found in HCPro's upcoming book The Credentialing Coordinator's Handbook by Anne Roberts, CPMSM, CPCS.
