A few weeks ago, we gave you five helpful questions to ask when assessing new technology or procedure requests. But who should answer those questions? In today's competitive market and with the rapid pace of technological advances, a technology assessment committee may be the best way for your organization to fully vet such requests.

A technology assessment committee can help your organization accomplish the following:

  • Align new technologies, procedures, and pharmaceuticals with the strategic mission of the hospital and the hospital's patient population
  • Develop and implement a systematic approach to evaluating new technologies and procedures
  • Develop plans for technology or procedure adoption and implementation
  • Assist with financial analysis of a new technology, including the true cost of the new technology and the expected return on investment
  • Set the performance metrics for a new technology, including financial, use, outcomes, and safety
  • Serve as a portal for long-term technology evaluation
