When your credentials committee recommends unfavorably for some or all of a practitioner's requested privileges, that recommendation should first be forwarded to your medical executive committee (MEC).

If it is a case where the credentials committee recommends that the applicant be granted membership to the medical staff but denies some of the requested privileges, the applicant has the right to request a fair hearing. The practitioner should also have the right to withdraw his or her requests for the privileges that were denied.

Under the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986, your organization does not have to report a withdrawal of requested privileges to the state medical board. If, however, the hospital ultimately denies certain requested privileges, the hospital is obligated to report that denial to the National Practitioner Data Bank via the state medical licensing board.
