"Phony physician" exposes potential weaknesses

Despite the increased scrutiny that physicians around the globe face these days-particularly when it comes to hiring practices-there remain loopholes that enable unqualified practitioners to manipulate their way into hospitals to pose as members of the medical staff.

 

The latest case comes out of Jamaica, where a former Toronto resident worked his way into a 500-bed teaching hospital and posed as a physician, "routinely examining [patients] and ordering up blood tests," reports the National Post, an Ontario-based newspaper.

 

Examining how the individual managed to stay in his post for so long, however, may provide some insight into how such individuals exploit the system. In this case, sources told the Post, the individual often assisted other physicians with cases, rather than taking the lead.
