The American Medical Association (AMA) is supporting a new bill introduced to the House of Representatives May 10 that requires healthcare providers to be clear about their credentials in advertisements.
"It's important that patients know the qualifications of the healthcare professional caring for them," says William Hazel Jr., MD, an AMA board member, in a press release issued by the AMA on May 10.
According to the AMA, public confusion regarding healthcare professionals' credentials is one compelling reason for the legislation. The press release cites a nationwide survey that found that "more than 70 percent [of those surveyed] think a podiatrist and optometrist are medical doctors. More than 50 percent think chiropractors and psychologists are medical doctors."
The bill, entitled "Health Care Truth and Transparency Act," has the support of a number of medical associations. To read the full press release, click here.
