Does your credentialing policy require applicants to report any felony convictions, and does it preclude appointment when the applicant discloses such convictions? While this requirement may be an increasingly typical part of credentialing policies, the broad use of the term felony, and others like it, also has pitfalls.

For example, the definition of a "felony" differs greatly from state to state. As a result, the individuals who drafted the policy may be unaware of the scope of misbehavior such a term represents. It is critical to be aware that the language you use can have an impact on how applicants, and even members of your own organization, interpret your policy.

Be as specific as possible when drafting your policies, and be sure that the meaning of the terms you use is clear.
