Avoiding common pitfalls is one of the most important things you can do to shield your hospital from liability, and following up on red flags is a crucial part of that process. Moreover, established case law dictates you must do more than simply verify credentials-you must follow up on issues that indicate a potential problem.

Such red flags can include (but are not limited to):

  • Substantial or questionable malpractice claims history
  • Inconsistencies between application and verification information
  • Missing documents, such as reference letters or proof of board eligibility or certification
  • Adverse action reports from NPDM or other organizations
  • Criminal convictions
  • Information suggesting poor clinical performance at other facilities
  • Revocation, suspension, or curtailment of staff privileges at another facility

Another important pitfall to avoid is using a summary sheet to detail physician's credentials. When you submit the file for approval, it should include the completed application and all supporting documents.
