Communication is of paramount importance in any medical staff office, and meetings are just one of the many tools you will need to employ to communicate effectively with your medical staff. But committee meetings won't be effective if you don't put some thought into how they will be run.
What constitutes an effective meeting? It starts with keeping committee officers well-informed about the meeting's goals. Both the MSP and the chair should have a reasonable idea of the outcome before the meeting ever happens.
Both the MSP and the committee chair can be more effective if they plan for the meeting in advance, including:
- Verifying all items on the agenda
- Determining items to be distributed to committee members before and during the meeting, making sure not to distribute sensitive or confidential material
- Identifying any noncommittee members, such as physician interviewees, who should attend
- Discussing the amount of time that should be spent on each agenda item
