The medical executive committee (MEC) is the only medical staff committee mandated by The Joint Commission. The MEC represents the medical staff and is responsible for the performance improvement of the professional services provided by all licensed independent practitioners and other practitioners privileged through the medical staff process.
The hospital's bylaws define who is a member of the MEC, and it is common practice today for the hospital's CEO to attend MEC meetings. Additionally, though the voting majority must be fully licensed physician members actively practicing in your hospital, all members of the medical staff are eligible for membership on this important committee.
Some characteristics to look for in potential MEC members include
- effective problem-solving skills
- good analytical and persuasive skills
- the ability to unite various members toward a common goal
- strength of character and fairness
- natural leadership skills
