Tip of the Week: Avoiding credentialing and privileging non-compliance

When The Joint Commission surveyors swing through on their next unannounced visit, be ready to demonstrate the strong, well-documented credentialing and privileging processes in place at your organization-especially if you are a critical access hospital (CAH).

 

While it sounds like a no-brainer for many medical staff offices, credentialing and privileging is turning out to be one of the most frequent areas of non-compliance at CAHs, according to The Joint Commission Online, a Web-based resource for the accreditor. Specifically, CAHs failed to comply with M.S. 4.10 (medical staff credentialing process) 6% of the time and M.S. 4.20 (setting-specific clinical privileges process) 19% of the time, The Joint Commission reported this month.
