According to a report from the American Hospital Association (AHA), US nurses are growing in number, up by nearly 8% to approximately 2.9 million between the years of 2000 and 2004.

These numbers are the result of a survey conducted by the Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA). Other statistics revealed by the survey:

  • This growth is a marked increase from the 5.4% growth seen between 1996 and 2000
  • More than 41% of nurses were age 50 or older
  • In 1984, 83% of RNs were employed, the highest rate since 1980.

The full report will soon be available on the HRSA Web site, www.bhpr.hrsa.gov.
