Two Oregon medical centers, who have previously shared medical staff, are in the midst of a battle of privileges for the region's cardiologists.

According to a report in The Oregonian, Providence Medford Medical Center recently announced plans to expand its cardiology program, inciting criticism from neighboring Rogue Valley Medical Center. Rogue Valley was previously the only hospital in the region offering a full range of cardiology services.

Providence Medford has threatened legal action after Rogue Valley denied privileges to the first cardiologist hired by Providence Medford. (Cardiologists routinely are privileged at both hospitals but perform more extensive cardiac procedures at Rogue Valley's facility.) Rogue Valley's parent company has imposed a moratorium on granting privileges to cardiologists for a minimum of six months.
