The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced that surveys for hospitals as well as critical access hospitals seeking accreditation for the first time will be conducted on an unannounced basis.

Unannounced initial surveys for critical access hospitals began in mid-August, and unannounced initial surveys for hospitals will begin at the start of 2007.

According to the Joint Commission's official announcement, the move to unannounced initial surveys for critical access hospitals and hospitals is intended to strengthen the emphasis on facilities' ability to be consistently prepared to deliver safe and high-quality care, as well as ensuring critical access hospitals meet Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements. CMS has urged the Joint Commission to conduct initial surveys of hospitals on an unannounced basis.
