The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has announced a second field review on proposed revisions to Standard MS.1.20, which is expected to introduce a new element of performance (EP) that would require extensive review of existing medical staff bylaws and other documents.

Earlier this summer, the JCAHO delayed implementation of this requirement until January 2007, citing a number of concerns from the field including fears that the new requirement as prescriptive and burdensome; that the changes challenged the governing body's ultimate authority within the organization; and that they undermined the role of the medical staff.

A new round of proposed revisions based on a previous field review, approved by the Standards and Survey Procedures Committee, has been posted to the Joint Commission's Web site for comment through October 27, 2006.
