Health plans accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) will be required to demonstrate their ability to provide members with information to help navigate the care system, as well as have programs available promoting wellness and to manage complex conditions, according to a recent statement from the NCQA.

These new standards "reflect an increased desire among consumers, employers, and plans to involve patients more directly in their care," according to an official statement from the accreditation agency.

Two content areas first launched as part of a voluntary program in 2005, Membership Connections and Care Management and Health Improvement, are set to be integrated in 2007.
