The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has released a study indicating that more effective communication between hospitals, public health agencies and emergency personnel are needed to provide better coverage during disaster situations.
Events in recent years such as terrorist attacks and natural disasters have raised awareness of disaster response. The study examined how healthcare facilities cooperate with community-based emergency response efforts.
The study recommends establishing drills and exercises more accurately depicting the stresses of an emergency situation over time; the creation of coalitions to examine community disaster resources; and national benchmarks for measuring emergency preparedness training.
For more information on this study, visit the Joint Commission's Web site at http://www.jointcommission.org/NewsRoom/NewsReleases/jc_nr_060906.htm.
