A physician involved in over 100 malpractice cases has legally changed his name.

John Anderson King, a West Virginia-based physician whose career has acted as a cautionary tale for credentialing and privileging processes nationwide, legally changed his name to Christopher Wallace Martin.

The orthopedic surgeon joined the medical staff at Putnam General Hospital in Hurricane, WV, in November 2002. He performed hundreds of surgical procedures before losing his privileges seven months later. Many of the suits faced by Putnam claim that the hospital overlooked warning signs, including the physician's stop-and-start education, discrepancies in his résumé, and involvement in past lawsuits.

King told an Alabama probate judge the name change was necessitated by a former coworker attempting to steal King's identity.
