Charles Cullen, the New Jersey nurse who killed as many as 40 patients during his 16-year career, received 11 consecutive life sentences in a decision rendered by Judge Paul W. Armstrong.  The sentence eliminates the possibility of parole, as Cullen would not be eligible before he has served 397 years.

Cullen pleaded guilty to 22 murders in New Jersey and seven in Pennsylvania. He administered lethal doses of medication to patients in an attempt to, in his opinion, ease their suffering.

Cullen worked in a string of hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, often terminated for performance reasons. His most recent stop was at the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ. He was charged with the murder of one patient and the attempted murder of another at that hospital.
