The American Medical Association has released a seven minute program, "Optimal Strategies for Addressing Language Barriers Between Physicians and Patients," discussing issues that arise when physicians and patients do not speak the same language, focusing on what types of language-access services are necessary to ensure quality of care and patient safety. Such services include interpreters and voice-activated translational software.
The AMA cites studies showing language barriers can have an adverse effect on healthcare and outcomes for patients with limited English proficiency.
